Adding video and audio to your website – useful tips and tools

Adding a video or an audio clip to your website will engage your potential customers in a way that images and copy can’t. Video and audio can actually give real examples of your products and services which helps people understand what you do or how your product or service can be used. It’s a sample of what’s on offer that they can browse at their own convenience. It is also a great way to put a little personal touch into your business. These days, with so much competition, people often ‘buy people’ when they are looking for a service. And including video and/or audio on your website gives people a glimpse of the ‘person’ or ‘people’ behind the company.

Some useful tools:
Vimeo
Upload your promo video and publish it on your website with Vimeo. You can easily set a still frame to represent your video when it’s not playing, change the size which shows on your website and control what playback tools to use. Simply choose the embed option, copy the code and paste it into your website. Vimeo takes care of the output for the web so you don’t have to worry about it taking up lots of space on your server. It’s very easy and looks great! For business users, I would recommend the Pro option because it allows more space and is for commercial use instead of for personal use. vimeo.com

If you need help embedding your videos onto your website, feel free to get in touch with me.

Here are some examples of videos I’ve put onto my clients’ websites:

Soundcloud
This is a super tool for adding audio to your website. Simply upload and grab the embed code. You can upload it to Facebook as well. So much fun and very easy to use! soundcloud.com If you only have one or two audio clips, then you can use Soundcloud for free but if you need to upload a lot of material, then I would recommend opening a paid account. That way you have more minutes available to use. Have fun!

Here are some examples of audio I’ve helped my clients include on their websites:

For The Difference

For Inspiring Global Entrepreneurs

For Bringing Up Brits

If you need help embedding your audio clips onto your website, feel free to get in touch with me.

If you need help shooting and / or editing video, please get in touch with Mi Elfverson of True North Vision.

If you need any voice over for your video or audio, then please get in touch with Ally Oliver of First Instinct Communications.

WordPress security advice

Many website owners have seen the news about WordPress websites being hacked and that hackers are trying their best to hack WordPress websites. If you have a WordPress website and you host with our partner hosting company, Ihelm-Enterprises Ltd, then you will have received an email from them explaining what to do in order to keep your WordPress website as secure as possible. Even if you host your website elsewhere, this information might be useful.

Points 1, 2, 3 and 4 are very straightforward and need no further explanation. (I have pasted these points from Ihelm-Enterprises Ltd below). Point 6 is also very clear and it is your responsibility to maintain your own computers/machines and ensure they are protected with anti-virus software, firewall and anti-spyware software. If you run a Mac, then you are secure as it’s all integrated. If you run a PC or PC laptop and don’t have any antivirus, then Google ‘Norton’, ‘AVG’, ‘Symantec’ or simply ‘anti virus software’, and you can find something to purchase and install. I strongly recommend that you take action on this if you have not already.

Point 5 is where you can choose to take action (or not) to further secure your WordPress website. This is up to you, as the website owner. You can choose to install a WordPress security plugin. There are several available. Google ‘WordPress security plugin’ and you will be able to find them. The plugin that seems the most popular is Better WP Security.
Better WP Security

If you are au fait with installing and configuring plugins, then you can go ahead and install a security plugin. Make a back up of your website and database first.

If you are not familiar with installing plugins, and would like me to do this for you, then please email me on meg@whiteochre.com and instruct me to do so and tell me which one you would like installed. I cannot guarantee it will install correctly as it may not be compatible with your theme and/or other plugins.

Some things to bear in mind, there may be bugs or errors, it may not be compatible with some of your other plugins. You need to fully back up your website before you install the security plugin and you will need to go through your website both front-end and back-end after install to make sure it’s all working correctly.

Hopefully this will help guard against hacking attempts.

Good luck and feel free to contact me if you require assistance with points 1, 2, 3 or 4.

I hope this helps.

My Favourite Fonts

I love finding new fonts and I don’t mind paying for them because they could make or break a logo design or the style of a company’s branding. I have learned a lot about fonts since I teamed up with one of my graphic designers, Wendy Barratt, and I’ve also learned a lot about how to use fonts on websites since I established White Ochre Design Ltd. Here are some of my favourite fonts.

Font BookScreenSnapz002

Font BookScreenSnapz001

Coneria ScriptFont BookScreenSnapz005

Raspoutine Classic

Font BookScreenSnapz006

I use Noteworthy font on two recent websites for clients who offer something completely different to each other. www.comcomcom.co.uk and www.comeandsingchoir.co.uk. And I also use Century Gothic on several logos/websites. www.liveit.com and www.clairenathan.com.

the year of the photographer

This year I’ve done a few photographer’s websites

www.ymdesign.co.uk
www.jowise.com
www.wiseboudoir.com
www.mooseazim.com

Moose Azim

but never on WordPress  …until now. I’ve done WordPress blogs for photographers’ non WordPress websites, but not their actual website showcasing their portfolio of work.

I was asked by Claire Nathan, a London based photographer, to create her portfolio website on WordPress. It’s tricky because of the nature of WordPress – if you are a web designer, then you know all about how WordPress works. I had to strip it down to pretty much nothing and then build up her photo galleries using a plugin. There were no free gallery plugins which would do what my client wanted so I purchased the TN3 gallery which can be used on a regular html/php based website and also on a WordPress site. Took a bit of coding work to get it to look the way the client wanted, but I eventually got there. The result is a stunning website with blog that my client can now add to whenever she wants. And it looks superb on an Ipad and has a mobile view for iphones.

Claire Nathan

It’s no laughing matter creating websites for clients. Well actually, my latest web design and build project was for two comedy writers. The Comedy in Communication Company is run by television and radio producer, Alan Nixon, and comedy writer, Charlie Adams. They spend their days writing for TV and radio and run comedy writing workshops in London and around the UK. White Ochre Design worked closely with Alan via video Skype and email to design and create their new website comcomcom.co.uk.

ComComCom

It is officially spring now (see my Bringing Up Brits blog post on spring in Britain) but it’s still freezing cold! Never mind! celebrate spring with The Difference family reflection activities. Website design by White Ochre Design. Heidi Walker, founder of the Difference is also my co-writer on my new book Inspiring Global Entrepreneurs.

The Difference

Happy spring everyone and don’t forget to ‘spring forward’ on Easter Sunday.

My new Apple World

So, after years of being a PC user for web-based work, I have finally swallowed hard, bit the bullet, dug deep into my pockets…. and bought the new I Mac. I spent most of Friday getting it all set up and operational. So far so good. It is fast, efficient and easy. Most things are drag and drop. I can run and use all my design programs at once and have several different browsers open and file transfers etc and the machine STILL operates just as fast. It is so awesome I wanted to celebrate, but of course having spent all my money, I didn’t have any money left to celebrate with, so instead I worked. Yes, I worked with a silly grin on my face looking at my new 27 inch screen and whizzing away on numerous projects.

Let me just say, the Apple store is an amazing place. I spent two hours in there buying my product and learning how to set it up. My 3 year old was with me and sat and played on the Ipads in various places around the store. The customer service is excellent. They even tested out my external hard drive for me to make sure it would be compatible and showed me how to sync everything with my Ipad. And, there is no ‘checkout counter’. It’s so easy and efficient it’s like magic. Better than Disney… well not quite, but ALMOST.

I love my new I Mac for several reasons. It is beautiful and makes my office look very impressive. But most importantly, it means I can be even more efficient and create even more stunning designs and websites for my clients. I have entered a higher-level of design I think. I’m so pleased. If you thought I was good before, then watch out everyone!

Here are the latest designs from White Ochre Design.

Not Just For Hire is an online shop for weddings and events. From chair covers to tiaras to sweetie carts, this shop offers everything you need to buy or hire for your event. We worked closely with Sara and Amanda to provide an online shopping solution for both their purchase products and their hire products.

Not Just For Hire

Changing Scenes garden designer Barry Chambers needed a website he could edit himself. White Ochre Design took his existing website, updated the design and re-built it in WordPress so that Barry could take control of the content on his website. After a tutorial at White Ochre Design, Barry can now update his projects gallery, news content and garden design course offerings.

My favourite designs from 2012

I’ve just launched a fabulous new website and worked on some very lovely new logos. However, I will blog about those in my next post. For today, I’d like to reflect on 2012. White Ochre Design Ltd has become so strong and solid over the past 4 years and I just wanted to have a quick round up and celebrate some of my favourite designs.

This is a website design for Live It and all its company ‘arms’. Live It Corporate, Live It Publishing and Live It Shop. It was a pretty huge project and great to be a part of. I love the colours and the vibrant ‘can do-ness’ of this company and the website reflects that and its ethos ‘live the life you want to live’.

Live It

Harbour Park hired me to re-design their website and company branding. I was up against some big names in the design industry and was thrilled to land this job. The job itself was not easy, but very enjoyable and the result is a fantastic website and wonderful new signage for their family run family amusement park. It was great to work with this company and White Ochre Design continues to work closely with them to produce banner designs, signage design, illustration and website design.

Harbour Park

I love working with clients who are passionate about what they do. Last year, I created a new logo and a brand new website for a Lewes based nutritionist. I LOVE the logo for Nutritional Values and the NOURISH website and my client is thrilled with both too.

The Nourish Diet

Some of my all time favourite logo designs:

The Funding Mentor

More designs coming soon!

I’ve also been busy training up in Illustrator and InDesign so I can stay on top of my game and work efficiently. On the look out for more training courses in SEO as well. It’s going to be a productive year.

New designs and new challenges in a new year

Logo design and brand new website for Hope Cottage, a 5 star luxury cottage.

Website re-design for FT Solutions, suppliers and installers of aerials
and satellite systems.

Logo design for a new e-commerce venture Eco Knit & Craft Shop
(Online shop coming soon!)

Website re-design for photographer Jo Wise www.jowise.com

Happy New Year everyone. What’s your challenge this year? Mine is to take White Ochre Design Ltd to the next level by increasing my skills base, increasing my company’s productivity and to really focus on specialising in the core services on offer – web design and e-commerce design. In 2013 I will also be exploring new ways to market the company to new businesses here in the UK and further afield.

My other project this year will be to make significant headway with my new book Starting Up Abroad: How to start a business as an expat entrepreneur in the UK and Europe (working title) which I am co-writing with Heidi Walker, a fellow expat entrepreneur. A personal goal is to get my book Bringing Up Brits more visible in general and an absolute bonus and overall thrill would be to get it in front of a famous and influential expat who is also ‘bringing up Brits’. Ideas and help are welcome!!

Meg
